Frequently Asked Questions About Hospice at Home Care
What Is Hospice Care at Home?
Hospice care at home is a multidisciplinary approach aimed at caring for a terminally ill patient in their residence. This type of care is primarily used to treat symptoms and to alleviate pain. At Luxe Hospice, our team of caring and skilled nurses and doctors will be assigned to you and give you or your loved one the peace of knowing you are in good hands
Can Someone Under 21 Use Hospice Home Care?
Yes, they can. Under section 2302 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a person under 21 can apply for hospice home care if their physician certifies they have a terminal condition and meet the requirements set forth by Medi-Cal and other insurers. Any curative treatments that accompany hospice care are provided by their physician and billed separately.
Who Pays For Hospice Care At Home?
The following are the most common ways California hospice care in the home is paid for:
- Medicare: This is the biggest payer of home hospice care in California and around the country. When you choose a Medicare-certified provider such as Luxe, Medicare will pay 100 percent of the costs. This insurance will pay for hospice care in the home, but it will not pay for your room and board if such costs exist. It is covered through a Medicare hospice benefit. Medicare hospice benefits are paid for six months but are renewable after that. It is necessary for you to obtain an approval from your doctor that will extend the time.
- Veterans Administration: VA insurance pays for at-home hospice care for veterans with six months or less to live.
- Private insurance: Many insurers have long-term care plans. It is important to check with the insurance company to see if you are covered. Some companies such as New York Life, MetLife or Pacific Life provide this coverage and may combine the long-term care policy with a life insurance plan. Check with your insurer or financial advisor to see what is right for you. Length of coverage depends on the policy.
- Medi-Cal: This California insurer will provide home hospice care for residents who are eligible for Medi-Cal insurance and who lack other forms of coverage for a period of six months.
